Rewarding excellence in the training industry
The World of Learning Awards are the industry's most prestigious accolades. Judged by an independent panel of industry experts, they recognise and reward organisations and people who have significantly advanced workplace productivity and performance within the industry.
The cream of the UK training industry gathered on 14 November for an evening of celebration and success at the World of Learning Awards 2006. The black-tie event at the NEC Birmingham was a sell-out with more than 450 guests.
The Awards showcased the very best new learning initiatives and venues of 2006 and individuals whose outstanding achievements have notably improved workplace productivity and performance.
Guests were treated to an evening of glitz and glamour enjoying a champagne reception, sumptuous four-course dinner and dancing into the early hours.

Winner: TNA Ltd – Fire Safety for BSkyB
TNA provided BSkyB’s staff with interactive and immersive training to practise and develop real competence in performing practical tasks, set in familiar workplace surroundings. TNA modelled actual BSkyB environments in high resolution 3D, using impressive special effects.
The solution uses good instructional design, excellent art direction and use of animated 3D graphics. It is a suberb example of using games and simulation in training.
This category recognises a tailor-made solution that has had a positive impact on the organisation that commissioned it. The programmes that had particular appeal were those that not only demonstrated good results, but also showed a clear commitment to the client’s branding and needs.

Winner: Comet Group Plc – Project Space: The Future of Product Knowledge
Comet developed a comprehensive structured approach to delivering product knowledge to its employees, through a cost-effective and engaging blend of coaching, e-learning and masterclasses. Through its ‘Learn It, Try It, Prove It’
e-learning method, it demonstrated not only a staggering cost saving, but the company also saw a remarkable uplift in product sales per hour.
The panel looked particularly for a solution that met real business needs, whether bespoke or generic.

BT Expedite’s Virtual View and Learn is an innovative in-store support and training tool that empowers store staff and encourages continuous learning while improving customer service.
The important criteria for selecting a generic product for 2006 was that it was easily adaptable for a variety of organisations, whilst also achieving significant demonstrable results.

Polestar’s solution demonstrated a new concept for the whole industry, and the judges found the approach to be highly professional and impressive.

As learning continually evolves and companies are finding new and effective ways of delivering knowledge and skills to their employees, it is exciting to see a great range of innovative approaches in this category.
