Director | Learnworks Ltd.
Centre Manager (University of Huddersfield) Teacher Education at the University Centre Calderdale College
I work as a teacher educator in the life-long learning sector delivering a wide range of teaching and training qualifications. This involves conducting learning interventions in different ways, online, classroom-based and hundreds of observations of teaching and training in practice in a very diverse range of settings from car maintenance workshops, construction sites, beauty parlours, football pitches, animal management and land-based settings to classrooms and lecture theatres. My trainees are delivering sessions on all sorts of topics from customer services, dentistry, speed awareness to philosophy. I am not an expert in these topics, I look at how and when learning happens, how the programmes are designed and delivered, what good and outstanding looks like and how everyone can get there.
In previous roles, I have worked in Social Services setting up group homes and developing work rehabilitation for vulnerable adults and those with mental health issues. I have worked in schools with refugee children and children with severe behavioural challenges. These experiences inform my approach to developing the whole person. I have been fortunate to see real change happen in people’s lives through the things they have learned whether their aim was gaining a leadership role or taking a bus unaccompanied. I have learned that radical change can start with tiny initiatives and changing the small stuff can require brave and radical action.
