Decision Making

Decision is like a sharp knife that cuts straight and clean, indecision a dull one that hacks and tears and leaves ragged edges

 – Graham Gordon

Life is very much about choices and decisions and working out what the best decision is can sometimes me a real conundrum.  Some decisions are relatively straightforward and others are definitely more difficult.

Simple decisions usually need a simple decision-making process.  Difficult decisions, however, typically involve a whole host of complex issues.  There are decisions, too, that have high-risk consequences, and the impact of the decision might have a high implication for you or for others.

Every given situation has its own set of uncertainties and consequences, and anything that involves interpersonal issues can often be challenging.  Here is some advice to help yo when making decisions:

Take 5 Tips

  1. Focus on one decision – Sometimes if you are not careful you can overwhelm yourself by attempting to juggle too many decisions at the same time.  Focus on one thing at a time and that way you will gain more clarity
  2. Gather information – When you are faced with a decision it is really important that you get as much information as you can about what will be involved.  This will then help you to make a better and more informed judgement of the situations.
  3. Weigh up the pros and cons – When you look at the options you have available to you, it is a good idea to write down the pros and cons of each situation so that you can weigh up the benefits and the consequences
  4. Make a plan of action – Once you have made a decision it is always a good idea to create a plan of intention and a step-by-step approach to keep yourself on track
  5. Stick with it – Once you have made your mind up, go with it and be positive and decisive

In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing

– Theodore Roosevelt
